Animals named in honor of Jose Rizal
Jose Rizal: Pioneer of Philippine Natural Sciences
Jose Rizal, renowned as a national hero and intellectual, also made significant contributions to the field of natural sciences. During his travels and exile in Dapitan, Rizal actively engaged in scientific research, particularly in biology, zoology, and botany. Collaborating with leading European scientists of his time, Rizal, alongside his students, collected numerous specimens of plants, animals, and ethnographic materials from Mindanao. These specimens were meticulously sent to his colleagues in Europe, where they made a remarkable impact on the scientific community.
Rizal’s work led to the discovery of several rare animal species, some of which were named in his honor. These included “Rhacophorus rizali”, a new species of frog; “Apogonia rizali”, a beetle; and “Draco rizali”, a species of lizard.
His contributions highlight his deep passion for the natural world and his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, extending beyond his revolutionary ideals and writings.
