ASEAN DAY Celebration
On This Day (August 8) in 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded in Bangkok with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by Indonesia (Adam Malik), Malaysia (Tun Abdul Razak), Philippines (Narciso Ramos), Singapore (S. Rajaratnam), and Thailand (Thanat Khoman)
They proclaim ASEAN as “the collective will of the nations of Southeast Asia to bind themselves together in friendship and cooperation and, through joint efforts and sacrifices, secure for their peoples and for posterity the blessings of peace, freedom, and prosperity.”
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam later joined the regional grouping. Currently, ASEAN is composed of 10 Member States.
Happy ASEAN Day!
