Cuartel MeisicĀ
The Cuartel de Meisic was located northeast of the Isla de Binondo. It occupies 2.6 hectares of an area known as the Isla de Meisic or Barrio Meisic. It was established as a Cavalry Barracks in the late 1700s but was subsequently used by different parts of the Spanish Army. A tobacco factory was also located in the compound during the latter half of the 1800s. US Forces took over the complex in the 1890s, designating the property as a US military reserve.
The Meisic Police Station was built on the property during this time. After the war, the property was turned over to the Philippine government in 1949. In 1954, the national government gave the City of Manila use of the property exclusively for the following facilities: the Jose Abad Santos High School, Meisic Police Station, Health Center, and Engineering Office. However, during the 2000s. Mayor Lito Allenza sold the property to a land developer.
All the facilities including the remaining walls of the barracks were demolished. It is now the location of Lucky Chinatown Mall and Hotel, The sale remains contentious to this day.
