Dr. Ramon Gustilo is a well-known academic and orthopedic surgeon. He was a pioneer in musculoskeletal infection research and treatment recommendations. His extensive orthopedic research prepared the basis for his successful work as an innovative surgeon. He created surgical instruments, fracture fixation devices, and implants for the benefit of the Filipinos.
In 1992, Dr. Ramon G. Gustilo established Orthopedic Innovations, Inc. (now Orthopedic International, Inc.) in Cabuyao, Laguna, to develop and produce novel, high-quality, and cost-effective orthopedic implants and devices. Several implant systems developed by the business have made fracture fixation devices, spinal implants, and hip and knee replacements more accessible to Filipino patients.
Dr. Gustilo served as the first chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) for 25 years. He also became the president of the Minnesota-Dakota-Manitoba (Mindaman) Orthopedic Society in 1974 and served as chairman of Minnesota’s state representative of the Subcommittee on Injuries to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in 1975 for five years.
CM Gustilo obtained his bachelor’s degree in pre-medicine in 1953, finished his medical studies in 1957 at the University of the Philippines, and was accepted into the Orthopedic Residency Program in 1960 at the University of Minnesota. He was elected to the Academy as a Corresponding Member in 2020.
