First Domestic Insurance Company in the Philippines
The first domestic or Filipino insurance company in Manila and the Philippines is the Insular Life Company, established in 1910.
The company’s first offices were located along Calle Echague. In 1934, to celebrate its growing prominence, Insular Life moved its headquarters to a new building in Plaza Moraga – at the very heart of Manila’s financial district.
The seven-story building, topped by a lantern with an eagle (the company’s mascot) perched on a globe, was one of Manila’s tallest buildings and most recognizable landmarks.
Insular Life moved to Makati in the 1960s. The old Insular Life Building was remodeled and “modernized”. The structure was gutted by fire in 2018.
