The first suspension bridge in Manila, Asia, and the first toll bridge in the Philippines was the Puente Colgante, built in 1852.
Also known as the Puente de Claveria, the bridge connected Quiapo to Manila and Arroceros. It was Manila’s second bridge over the Pasig River.
The bridge has masonry piers upon which a wooden deck was suspended using steel wires and cables. Both pedestrians and light vehicles used it.
The Ynchausti y Compania built and operated the toll bridge. The city of Manila bought the bridge in 1911, which abolished the toll fees. Traffic was soon confined to pedestrians as the bridge got older.
In 1939, the suspension bridge was demolished and replaced by Quezon Bridge.
