The late Dr. Gregorio T. Velasquez (September 2, 1901 – July 29, 1989), Professor Emeritus of Botany at the University of the Philippines, was the leader and catalyst in all aspects of the study of Philippine phycology.
The title “Father of Philippine Phycology” was given to him as a tribute for his zealous interest, enthusiasm, and dedication to his craft, as well as his significant contributions to science.
The marine plant herbarium holds the country’s largest collection of benthic marine macroalgae, including the freshwater algal collection of Dr. Velasquez and the seagrass collection of Dr. Miguel D. Fortes, his former student, and colleague is named in his honor: the Gregorio T. Velasquez Phycological Herbarium.
