Dr. Josephino C. Comiso
Let’s get to know more about the members of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL).
Dr. Josefino C. Comiso is a known expert in the field of physical sciences. He was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the local and international scientific community and the general public, as a polar science expert, climatologist, and satellite remote sensing scientist. His research provided new insights into many important polar processes.
Dr. Comiso is one of the founding members of the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE), which has attracted more than 200 highly achieving scientists, engineers, and scholars with Filipino backgrounds who are residing in the United States, the Philippines, and other countries. He was also a Balik Scientist awardee and served as a visiting scientist or guest professor in numerous universities including the University of the Philippines (UP) and Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU).
Among his various awards, Corresponding Member Comiso was a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, the most eminent award given to a NASA scientist.
He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman in 1962, his Master of Science in Physics from Florida State University (FSU) in 1966, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from the University of California (UC) at Los Angeles in 1972. He was elected to the Academy as Corresponding Member in 2017.
