Kutsinta History
The name of the rice cake “kutsinta” has two possible origins. First, it was named after the kitchen tool that was used to make it flat and saucer-like . Second, it came from the word “Kueh Tsin Tao”, a Hokkien word that means small cookie or cake. The Filipinos later added the use of grated coconuts as topping.
Kutsinta is a traditional dessert often served during the holiday season and other traditional celebrations like fiestas and weddings.
Old traditional beliefs say that kutsinta, being sticky, symbolizes “making the family stick together”. It is also believed that the presence of kutsinta on New Year’s Eve will bring good luck and sweet relationships.
