The Philippines is the world’s leading source of professional seafarers.
Life at the Sea: Professional Filipino Seafarers
Seafaring is deeply rooted in the country’s history and culture. Today’s seafarers have a clear connection with the Austronesian ancestors who skillfully and patiently crossed dangerous seas to build communities in various islands in the Philippines and beyond. Seafarers today also bravely venture into challenging oceans for the sake of their family and country.
In 2020, an estimated half a million Filipino professional seafarers are employed worldwide. Recognized as the “manning capital of the world”, the Philippines is the world’s leading source of seafarers serving various types of shipping companies specializing in oil and gas exploration, container shipping, ferries and passenger, cruise ships, commercial fishing, and others.
