Our featured Cultural and Heritage Site will be outside of Metro Manila, the Liberty Shrine on the historic island of Cebu.
The Liberty Shrine or Mactan Shrine is located in Lapu-Lapu City, built in the area where the historic Battle of Mactan occurred in 1521, also the location where the Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines were held.
Liberty Shrine, also known as Mactan Shrine, is a national shrine built on the approximate spot where the Battle of Mactan took place in 1521. The shrine contains two monuments: the Magellan Monument and the Lapu Lapu Monument.
The Magellan Monument was built in 1866 and dedicated to the Spanish glory brought by Ferdinand Magellan in reaching the Philippines. In 1981, a bronze statue of Lapu Lapu was erected nearby. The Mactan chieftain fiercely resisted the Spaniards and his battle with the colonists killed Magellan.
The park hosts “Kadaugan sa Mactan” a reenactment of the historic battle, during every Battle of Mactan anniversary celebration.
