A little-known fact about the Philippine flag

Did you know?

The Philippine flag of the Philippines was unfurled not at a balcony but at a window. Here’s a little information about our first Independence Day.

Contrary to popular belief, on 12 June 1898, the Philippine flag was waved by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, not by Emilio Aguinaldo. It was done at the window of Aguinaldo’s Bahay-na-Bato, not at the balcony that did not exist at the time.

The Philippine flag was first unfurled at the Teatro Caviteno in Cavite Nuevo (now Cavite City) on 28 May 1898, after the victory at the Battle of Alapan.
