Manila by Night
Original Commemorative Screening Poster
Film by Ismael Bernal
Experimental Cinema of the Philippines
1985
Collection: Archivo 1984 Gallery
This 1985 poster for a commemorative screening of “Manila by Night” was in leiu of none for the 1980 premier. (A newspaper advertisement was however released when it was first shown.) The film was directed by the inimitable auteur Ishmael Bernal and involved many of the Manila intellegentsia in its making. The 1985 poster affected the rough cut-out strip from paper collage experimentations of the period immediately before the People Power Revolution of 1986. Film, posters, directors, and actors shared a critical sensibility.
