On this day in 1983 president Ronald Reagan announced plans to build the Strategic Defensive Initiative: a system of satellites that would be the US’s defense against ballistic missiles. It was a plan that many believed was impractical and impossible but was one of the reasons for the fall of communism in the USSR.
