On this day, March 23, is the birth of National Scientist Encarnacion A. Alzona (1895) and the death of National Scientist Onofre D. Corpuz (2013).

On this day in 2021, the Suez Canal was temporarily closed for 6 days after the mega-freighter Ever Given ran aground and blocked it.

On this day in 1983 president Ronald Reagan announced plans to build the Strategic Defensive Initiative: a system of satellites that would be the US’s defense against ballistic missiles. It was a plan that many believed was impractical and impossible but was one of the reasons for the fall of communism in the USSR.

March is National Women’s Heart Health Month (Proclamation No. 1675, s. 2008).
