On this day, March 24, is the death of National Artist Amado V. Hernandez (1970).

On this day in 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound in Alaska and spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the sea. This is one of the worst oil spills in history.

On this day in 1882, Robert Koch announced to the Berlin Physiological Society his discovery of the cause of tuberculosis. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for this in 1905.
