Marife, a “manglalala ho ikam” (mat weaver), is revered in her community for her name is synonymous with “Ikam Sodsod”, which she has refined after years of weaving. Marife who started learning ikam at 10 years old has accomplished the mastery of ikam artistry: determined and meticulous throughout the process of creating ikam. Her ikam is refined through her continuous practice and openness to always strive for excellence.
Marife’s mats serve as symbolic representations of profound memory, bridging and paying tribute to numerous generations of manglalala. Presently, she diligently seeks to discover the roots of this art form, involving and empowering the young women in her community to partake in the tradition.
