On this day, November 8

Today in History, November 8, in 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (local name: Super Typhoon Yolanda) made landfall at Guiuan, Eastern Samar. At the time it was the most powerful storm to made landfall in recorded history, with high winds at 190 mph. This record was broken by Goni (Rolly) with 195 mph.

Due to the strength of Haiyan, communicating the clear danger of the storm surge caused by the typhoon became paramount as the Philippine government prepared for its approach.
