The oldest company in the Philippines
The oldest company in Manila, and the Philippines, is the Ayala Corporation, founded in 1834.
The company started as the Casa Roxas, which operated a distillery in San Miguel, Manila. The Ayala y Compania, which expanded and consolidated the growing business partnership, was established in 1876.
The company helped transform Manila’s transportation by introducing the first tram or tranvia system in 1888. The company then expanded into real estate and insurance. The company helped develop the business district of Makati in the 1960s.
In 1968, the Ayala Corporation was created. It is the largest Philippine corporation today.
Ayala Corporation today is still present in Manila, operating banks, telecommunications, water utilities, real estate, malls, and manufacturing.
