Penitensya ng Infanta
Self-flagellation is a common form of penitensiya in different places of the Philippines during the Holy Week, but what sets the flagellants of Infanta apart from others is the way they dress when they perform the tradition. For this Maundy Thursday, we feature the unique tradition of Infanta, Quezon.
The flagellants wear a headdress called “tukarol,” which is made of bamboo and leaves and decorated with flowers, flags, and religious images. They also wear a “saya” or a skirt made of dried banana leaves. The flogs or “panyabat” that they use are made of wood.
