From Tau’t Batu beliefs: “Salag” – Is another evil spirit that causes death to man. He is pictured as a skeleton with a cape and can fly. Tau’t Batu claims that salag is also present in each human being and in the joints of the shoulders, elbows, knees, and hips. This could be the reason why children are afraid of burial caves.”
The western flank of Mount Mantalingajan in southern Palawan is marked by a karst formation with one of the largest sinkholes in the world, forming a basin-like valley drained by the Sumurum River. In this relatively isolated valley live the Tau’t Batu. Their primary language is Southwest Palawano. The primary religion practiced by the Tau’t Batu is their ethnic beliefs.
I’ll be sharing the entire pantheon of Tau’t Batu beliefs in a future post. *spoiler* It’s wonderful.
