San Francisco Church and the Chapel of the venerable third-order (VOT)
The original motherhouse of the Franciscan Order in the Philippines. Dedicated to Our Lady of Angels. Rebuilt three times due to fire and earthquake. The last church in Intramuros was rebuilt in 1739. The church was notable for its elegant five-storey facade, capped by an espadaƱa or bell tower in the middle. beside the church stood the Venerable Third Order’s Chapel.
The chapel for Spanish laypeople was built as an identical copy of the church in the 18th century. It was slightly modified in the 19th century. Both structures were destroyed in 1945 during the Battle of Manila. The statue of San Antonio de Padua in the plaza was relocated to Makati. The site is now occupied by Mapua University.
