Traslacion or Feast of the Black Nazarene (Manila’s Great Religious Procession)
An annual religious festivity centered on the veneration of the image of the Black Nazarene at Quiapo Church. The feast, which takes place on January 9, commemorates the transfer of the copy of the image of the Black Nazarene from the Recollect church in Intramuros to Quiapo in 1787.
Veneration of the Black Nazarene started in Bagumbayan and Intramuros in the 1600s. Initially confined to Quiapo, the procession today starts at Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, heading north to Quiapo Church.
The procession takes 15-16 hours on average to complete and is attended by massive numbers of devotees and pilgrims reaching more than a million.
