First Railway Station in Manila
Manila’s first railway station was the tutuban station, located along Calle Azcarraga (C.M. Recro Avenue today). The station was built in 1887 as part of the construction of the British-operated Manila-Dagupan Railway Line, the first train line in Luzon.
The station was built in the bahay na bato style, featuring a lower floor built of red bricks with a wooden upper structure. The terminal area featured more modern industrial elements such as steel beams, steel trusses, and ornate steel columns.
Tutuban Station was Manila’s main or central railway station. The station was used from 1892 up until 1991 when 22 hectares of the Tutuban station were sold and turned into a mall. A new Tutuban Station, far simpler than the old one, was built further north in 1994. It is still used by the Philippine National Railways (PNR) today.
The former main station was partially preserved, and could still be seen and visited today as part of the Tutuban Mall.
