Hospital Real: First Hospital of Manila
Manila’s first hospital was the Hospital Real or Royal Hospital, which was established in Manila in 1571. It had previously been located in Cebu but was moved to Manila when the settlement became the new capital.
The hospital was managed by the Franciscan Order from 1587 to 1685. Due to the growing cost of operations, the hospital was turned over to the city government. The hospital was gradually expanded, eventually occupying the full length of a city block in Intramuros.
The Hospital Real later known as the Hospital Militar was destroyed in the 1863 earthquake. It was never rebuilt.
