Plaza Santa Ana en el arrabal de San Sebastian
(Plaza Santa Ana in the suburb of San Sebastian)
San Sebastian was one of Manila’s arrabales or suburbs due to its distant location outside the Walled City of Intramuros. Felix Laureano also took photographs of Manila’s other arrabales such as Paco, Tondo, Ermita, and Malate.
This group of photographs is an interesting visual document of the 19th-century urban landscape in the Philippines. Almost all were published in the illustrated news in 1897 to provide more information to the Spanish public about life in its Pacific colony.
