The Destruction of Manila 1570
In May 1570, a Spanish expedition led by Martin de Goiti, arrived at the Tagalog settlement of Maynila. The initially peaceful exchange between de Goiti and Rajah Sulayman, the Muslim ruler of Maynila, soon turned into a violent fight.
Spanish forces assaulted the palisaded fort Sulayman, taking the fort by storm. The Spanish then torched the settlement of Maynila before heading back to their base in Panay. The following year, 1571, a larger expedition led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived in the region, taking control of Maynila.
