The First Geopark in the Philippines

PAHALIPAY ALANG SA MGA BOL-ANON!

MAY 24, 2023 was a momentous day for the Boholanos in the global arena. The entire island province of Bohol is now a full-fledged Global Geopark officially designated by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Also, Bohol is the first and the only geopark in the Philippines along with 17 newly designated geoparks across the globe. Regarding land and coastal coverage, Bohol is the largest geopark in Asia and the 5th largest in the world. This growing network of global geoparks brings opportunities for partnerships and benchmarking in terms of site conservation, geoscience education, and research. Boholanos can leverage this designation in promoting Bohol as a sustainable tourist destination, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals of UNESCO.

In celebration of this global achievement, today, June 22, a handover ceremony was facilitated by the Provincial Government of Bohol through the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office in the Provincial Capitol. The ceremony was led by Dr. Ivan Anthony S. Henares, UNACOM Secretary-General and officially accepted by the Bohol Governor, Hon. Erico Aristotle C. Aumentado.

In recognition of the decade of hard work, perseverance, and commitment among the technical working group members, advisers, partners, volunteers, government agencies, and stakeholders, another activity occurred at the Chocolate Hills Complex in the Municipality of Carmen. The National Museum PH as an educational institution for the protection, preservation, and dissemination of the legacy of the Filipinos, commits to upholding the necessary actions to sustain this global title.
