The heartwood of the Sappan
The heartwood of the Sappan (Caesalpinia sappan L.), a species of a flowering tree in the legume family, is made into chips or reduced to powder and fermented to produce dyes for textiles. It can produce shades of red– colors range from pink to scarlet.
