Buko Pie is a traditional Filipino dessert that originated in Laguna. In the 1950s Nanette Pahud sharpened her baking skills, worked for an American professor at the University of the Philippines-Los Banos, and learned to make apple pie.
She wanted to open a bakery, but there was a limited supply of apples. She experimented with young coconuts instead. Her shop, the Orient Bakery, opened in 1965, and soon became famous in Laguna.
Buko Pie is a popular pasalubong item for tourists visiting Laguna, especially San Pablo and Los Banos.
