The street called initially Calle Isaac Peral, named after Isaac Peral y Caballero who was a Spanish naval officer and engineer. Peral invented the first electric-powered submarine in 1888 known as the Peral Submarine. In his younger years, Peral was stationed in the Philippines. It was while here in 1881 that Peral suffered a wound in his temple (while at the barbershop) which would gradually become a tumor. He died in Berlin in 1895.
In the early 1900s, the street was lined with big Trees which provided shade over the street.
A few years after WW II, the street was renamed United Nations Avenue, in celebration of the United Nations and the World Health Organization or WHO (a UN
agency) whose regional office was located along the street.
