The First Director of the National Library

In 1916, then-Secretary of the Philippine Assembly Teodoro M. Kalaw (1884-1940) was appointed as the first director of the National Library (formerly known as the museo-Biblioteca de Filipinas).

He continued his directorship from 1929 to 1939 where he pursued the development of Philippine historical research.

During his term, the following books were published:

  • Ang Pinagtatalunang Akta ng Katipunan (1930),
  • Gregorio H. Del Pilar: Heroe de Tirad (1930),
  • Las Cartas Politicas de Apolinario Mabini (1930), and
  • Epistolario Rizalino (1930-1937), among others.

Aside from his tenure as the director of the NLP, Teodoro Kalaw was an exemplary journalist, historian, and statesman.

At present, the National Library of the Philippines’ location is the busy street in Manila aptly named after Teodoro M. Kalaw.
