A graceful double outrigger Bangka (this one known as a kalansisi) graces the shore of Albay Gulf. Because of their intimate link with the sea, Filipinos possess extraordinary boat-building skills, for which the islanders, since pre-Hispanic times, have been renowned.
That connection has also stirred the Filipino to master navigation: to know the ebb and flow of the tides, the direction, and strength of currents, and how to face the waves. It has been said that one of every three seamen in the world is a Filipino.
