Portrait of an Old Woman by Araceli Limcaco Dans
ARACELI LIMCACO DANS
(1929-2024)
The National Museum of the Philippines mourns the passing of Araceli Limcaco Dans, an artist, art educator, and Presidential Medal of Merit awardee for co-founding the Philippine Art Educators Association (PAEA). She was known for her hyperrealistic paintings of calado, an embroidered pineapple or banana fiber textile.
She graduated from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts, where National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino mentored her.
To honor her memory, we are highlighting her work, “Portrait of an Old Woman” (1947), currently on exhibit at the Gallery IX: Early 20th Century Philippine Portrait Hall of the National Museum of Fine Arts. The National Fine Arts Collection has two other works of the artist, Kimona ni Lola (1993, print on paper) and Yakap ng Kapayapaan (2003, acrylic on canvas), donated by the artist in 2017.
