2019 Luzon Earthquake
As we observe Earth Day, April 22 also marks the anniversary of the 2019 Luzon earthquake which claimed the most lives and caused the most damage to Pampanga. The province and region’s active geological setting can be considered both a blessing and a curse, as it makes the area a fertile agricultural center of Luzon while also making it prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
On April 22, 2019, at 5:11 pm Philippine time, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Central Luzon. The epicenter was located in San Marcelino, Zambales, while most of the damages and casualties were recorded in Pampanga where multiple buildings were damaged, including heritage buildings such as churches and a supermarket that collapsed where several casualties were reported.
