Dr. Manolo G. Mena is a well-known metallurgy specialist. He was recognized for his research on metal recovery from unconventional sources, including chromium from chromite tailings, copper from chrysocolla, gold from refractory pyrites, nickel and cobalt from laterites, and other recovery processes.
Dr. Mena is currently a Professor Emeritus in Metallurgy at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman’s College of Engineering. Aside from teaching for more than 45 years, he also provides professional assistance to graduate students of the institution. Furthermore, he was influential in establishing the Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. and MSE programs, a collaborative program between the College of Engineering and the College of Science in the early 1990s.
Among the prestigious awards he has received are the Gawad Chancellor by the UP Diliman in 2020, the Excellence Award in Materials Engineering in Semiconductor Industry by the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 2019, the Outstanding Metallurgical Engineering Graduate by the UP Alumni Engineers Association in 2004, Lifetime Achievement Award in Research by the National Research Council of the Philippines in 1998, and the Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Academy of Science and Technology in 1986.
Acd. Mena obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of the Philippines in 1977 and 1979, respectively; and his Doctor of Philosophy in Metallurgy from the University of Dr. Annabelle P. VillalobosUtah, United States of America in 1983. He was elected to the Academy as Academician in 2021.
