What is the Dr. Geminiano De Ocampo Visionary Awards for Medical Research?
The Dr. Geminiano De Ocampo Visionary Awards for Medical Research or GTOVA is an award which aims to recognize clinician-researchers who have created the vision for medical research in the country through their outstanding work in medical research that has blazed and/or pioneered the trail for medical innovation and health research and development. The research should have created and traversed new frontiers in medicine through significant contributions to the fund of medical knowledge or the advancement of clinical practice in the country and have significantly impacted on the lives of the Filipino people.
This award is given in memory and in honor of National Scientist Geminiano De Ocampo who epitomized all these achievements by excelling in his chosen field of medicine: ophthalmology.
Dr. De Ocampo was a Man of Firsts, a Visionary who created and realized the future of medicine in the country through his ground-breaking and pioneering efforts in clinical practice and in research, inspiring other doctors to pursue the same.
The award is made possible through an endowment of the De Ocampo family.
The GTOVA for Medical Research is given biennially. The winner will receive a medal, a plaque, and a cash prize.
The National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) is the highest recognition body in the Philippines, that recognizes and provides incentives to Filipino scientists for outstanding achievements in scientific research and development.
NAST PHL, through its Recognition function, has contributed significantly in promoting and fostering excellence in science and technology research in the country.
