Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong (New NAST Academician)

“I am happy that my research and work have been recognized to be worthy of this honor and privilege. At the same time, I am cognizant of the fact that I need to do more in terms of helping move translational and relevant research come fore that can make a difference in the lives of our countrymen.”

Dr. Chiong is an internationally recognized expert in the field of otolaryngology. Her translational research in otology and neurotology-skull base surgery has been very beneficial to the advancement of knowledge in these fields in the country and abroad.

She pioneered cochlear implantation surgery and other implantable hearing devices in the Philippines for the surgical restoration of hearing, especially in deaf children.

She is the current Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of the Philippines Manila where she led efforts in producing physician-scientists.

She was also the founding Director of the Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Center, and former Director of the Philippine National Ear Institute, and was responsible for the modernization of the Philippine General Hospital Ear Unit.

Dr. Chiong will officially join the ranks of NAST members on July 10, 2020, during the NAST Virtual Awarding Ceremony.

Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong is recognized for her pioneering work as a neurotologist in the Philippines that helped improve the quality of care for deaf adults and children, those with temporal bone cancer and skull base tumors, and those with intractable dizziness or vertigo. She was an internationally known expert in the field of otolaryngology.

In 2009, Dr. Chiong played a part in conceptualizing the passage of Republic Act No. 9707, “An Act Establishing a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program for the Prevention, Early Diagnosis and Intervention of Hearing Loss,”. She was also the founding Director of the Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Center, and former Director of the Philippine National Ear Institute, and was responsible for the modernization of the Philippine General Hospital Ear Unit.

Dr. Chiong is currently the Dean of the College of Medicine of the University of the Philippines Manila and has led efforts in accelerating the production of physician-scientists through novel academic programs at the college for all constituents from students to young mid-career and even senior faculty members. She has been instrumental in increasing the number of PhDs through her active engagement in the development of the two Ph.D. programs- the Ph.D. by research and the Ph.D. by publication.
Dr. Chiong obtained his Bachelor of Science in Zoology (summa cum laude) from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1981, her Doctor of Medicine from the University of the Philippines Manila in 1985, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences from Radboud University in 2013. She was elected to the Academy in 2020.
