Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong (New NAST Academician)
“I am happy that my research and work have been recognized to be worthy of this honor and privilege. At the same time, I am cognizant of the fact that I need to do more in terms of helping move translational and relevant research come fore that can make a difference in the lives of our countrymen.”
Dr. Chiong is an internationally recognized expert in the field of otolaryngology. Her translational researches in otology and neurotology-skull base surgery have been very beneficial to the advancement of knowledge in these fields in the country and abroad.
She pioneered cochlear implantation surgery and other implantable hearing devices in the Philippines for the surgical restoration of hearing, especially in deaf children.
She is the current Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of the Philippines Manila where she led efforts in producing physician-scientists.
She was also the founding Director of the Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Center, former Director of the Philippine National Ear Institute, and was responsible for the modernization of the Philippine General Hospital Ear Unit.
Dr. Chiong will officially join the ranks of NAST members on July 10, 2020, during the NAST Virtual Awarding Ceremony.
