Retablo of Juan De Los Santos

The “retablo” or main altarpiece, which was made in 1617 by the carver, Juan De Los Santos, for the San Agustin Church, was transferred by the sacristy probably in the 17th and 18th century because the retablo’s Iconic-Corinthian style no longer conformed with the Baroque style renovations in the church.

The “retablo” shows the symmetry of Renaissance architecture while the broken arch pediment in the upper part is influenced by the mannerist style.

The original wood-gilded image of “santos” (saints) that filled the niches was stolen by the British in 1762 and by the North American soldiers in 1898. Some of the ‘santos’ that are actually in the niches were donated in 1971 by Enrique Santamaria; others came from the Augustinian Monastery of Cebu.

Also displayed is the image of the risen Christ at the San Agustin Museum.
