The bronze statue of UST founder Archbishop Miguel de Benavides
The lot of Plaza Sto. Tomas was purchased by the Dominican Order in 1627 and was used as a cemetery and garden. It was bought by the city government in 1861, converted into a public plaza, and was turned over to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in 1879.
The bronze statue of UST founder Archbishop Miguel de Benavides was erected in 1891. The original monument was transferred to the present campus along EspaƱa Street after the Second World War. This replica was installed in 2002.
