On this day in 1791, 10 amendments called the “Bill of Rights” were added to the US Constitution.

On this day in 2000, the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine was shut down for good. In 1986 it exploded and caused nuclear damage that is still felt in Europe today. It was periodically opened in parts that were not damaged by the explosion until it was permanently closed in 2000.

December is Energy Consciousness Month (Proclamation No. 1427, s. 2007).
