Escolta is one of Manila’s oldest street, named from the Spanish word escoltar, which means “to escort.” From the 1800s to the late 1990s, Escolta was the principal business and commercial area of Manila.
Escolta was born because of a successful urban development that grew to encompass a large area of Gorricho land, eventually becoming Manila’s most important commercial district.
