November is designated as National Rice Awareness Month in the Philippines by the Department of Agriculture, so for the next few posts we’ll present some rice terminologies in Kapampángan! Rice is a staple in many Asian diets and this is evident with the abundance of rice-related vocabulary in these languages.

Etymology:
Pálé comes from Proto-Austronesian *pajay (“rice plant”) and is related to the English word paddy which comes from Malay padi (“rice plant”), a cognate of the Kapampángan word.
