Saint Augustine Parish Church

For another Good Friday Visita Iglesia feature, let’s take a trip back to the North to the historical province of Bulacan to visit the Saint Augustine Parish Church in the municipality of Baliuag.

The Saint Augustine Parish Church in Baliuag, Bulacan is striking for its imposing facade and towering belfry. The parish was established by Augustinians in 1733 under the patronage of Saint Augustine of Hippo. The present structure, built in the Baroque style, was finished in 1830. Its massive structure made of limestone, gravel, sand, steel, and bricks was designed to withstand revolts and rebellions. The tall portico in front and the marble relief of Moses at the foot of the bell tower were later additions.

The Baliuag Church is known for its Good Friday procession, which features more than 100 carrozas bearing life-size images and tableaux that depict the ministry, the Passion, and the death of Jesus Christ.
