Let’s get to know more about the members of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL).

Dr. Carlito B. Lebrilla is recognized for his pioneering work in the development of glycomic tools for health and diseases. He concentrated on oligosaccharide ionization and gas-phase chemistry, then built extensive glycan libraries for putative and exact structures with branching and linkages.

Corresponding Member Lebrilla made a significant contribution by developing profiling and bioinformatics methods for rapidly profiling and annotating glycans in thousands of samples. His analytical strategy has since been used in many other laboratories dealing with a variety of other diseases. His work has resulted in several patents and start-up companies for cancer early detection. He also played a part in publishing the first glycomic study of cancer serum patients in 2006.

Dr. Lebrilla also collaborated with instrument manufacturers to create a device for oligosaccharides isomer separation. His tools have been duplicated in numerous other laboratories and continue to drive biology-driven analytical methods. His group created an algorithm and software that uses his glycan library to reduce the number of combinations, increasing the speed and specificity of the analysis. The work has stimulated the development of new commercial software and glycoprotein analysis methods.

CM Lebrilla is a distinguished professor at the University of California, Davis. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and his Doctor of Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of California in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He was elected to the Academy as Corresponding Member in 2017.
