Endangered Sea Turtles in the Philippines
The Philippines is home to 5 of the 7 sea turtle species in the world:
- Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Talisayon, Bildog,
- Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) Pawikan, Karahan, Payukan,
- Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta carreta) Pawikan, Bulawon,
- Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) Pawikan, Binalimbing, Laton, and
- Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) Pawikan, Kantiwan, Mukoy.
All species are endangered and are listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
The Philippines’ turtle conservation work has spanned almost four decades, thus ensuring that biodiversity is protected for current and future generations.
