On this day, January 18, in 1871 the king of Spain appointed Rafael de Izquierdo to replace Gov. Gen. Carlos de la Torre.

On this day in 1911, the first landing of an airplane on the “flight deck” of a ship took place by Eugene Ely on the ship Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay.

On this day in 1936, Su-Lin, a young male panda, arrived in America. He was the first panda to be brought and cared for outside of China. He died at Brookfield Zoo in 1938.
