On this day, January 23, in 1899, the First Republic of the Philippines was established in Malolos. This date is Philippine Republic Day according to Proclamation No. 533 s2013.

On this day in 2009 the birth of a clone of an extinct animal, the Pyrenean ibex, took place. The clone was derived from DNA extracted from the skin of a Pyrenean ibex that died in 1999. The clone lived for seven minutes.
