Aguinaldo Shrine Kawit Cavite
We are going to feature Cultural and Heritage Sites where the Philippine Flag is flown permanently (Republic Act No. 8491). First off our list is Aguinaldo Shrine, the residence of Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite, where the Philippine Independence was proclaimed after the Spanish Colonization.
The ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo was a focal point in Philippine history. At one of its windows, the Declaration of Philippine Independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898.
The residence was constructed in 1845 by Emilio’s parents. The house was initially made of nipa thatch and timber and reconstructed as a bahay-na-bato as the family grew. This was also where Emilio was born. In the 1920s, he expanded the house to include its tower and the famous Independence balcony.
In 1963, one year before Aguinaldo passed away, he donated the house to the Filipino people. It was declared a National Shrine on June 18, four months after Aguinaldo’s death.
