Mangkono Tree
Mangkono tree is the ironwood in the Philippines. Mangkono (Xanthostemon verdugonianus) is the hardest among the tree species in the country, perhaps because it has the highest relative density (RD) of 1.452 at the oven-dry condition.
Mangkono, also known as Philippine ironwoodis an endangered endemic tree known for its extremely durable, pest-resistant wood. It produces bright red flowers locatedat its terminal branches. This tree thrives in nutrient-poor, ultramafic forests.
