Rizal as a student
Jose Rizal, our country’s most prominent national hero, was a very studious student when he was still very young. He first enrolled at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, earning his Bachiller en Artes with top marks.
At the University of Santo Tomas he pursued preparatory courses for law, but upon learning his mother was going blind, he shifted to medicine. Rizal was a favorite among his professors at the University of Santo Tomas and was given the special privilege of taking his pre-med and med courses simultaneously. He was consistently second in class next to Cornelio Mapa, a fellow Filipino. He stayed at Santo Tomas for four years before moving to the Universidad Central de Madrid where he earned his Licentiate in Medicine.
